Susheela Raman’s upcoming single is a new version of David Bowie’s song ‘Golden Years’, marking the fiftieth anniversary of Bowie’s album ‘Station to Station’ on which this iconic track appears.
After recording sessions in Paris, London and Cornwall, Susheela travelled to New York to mix her version with legendary producer Tony Visconti who worked with Bowie on so many of his great albums.
Released on November 6th, ‘Golden Years’ marks Raman’s first release since Ghost Gamelan (2018). The song is taken from a forthcoming EP, already mixed with Visconti. An album based on the visionary poetry of William Blake is also nearly complete.
’Golden Years’ still sounds so contemporary. Everyone has their own relationship with Bowie, and everyone has their own meanings for his songs.
I feel like his work and the way he traversed different avatars is about the power of imagination, always exploring, which is something I can relate to as an artist.
Although its from his mid 70’s L.A. period, it’s an outsider’s take, a slice of English magical imagination. I think of him in L.A. recording this on the edge of a psychic abyss, but with a great band and producing amazing work.
I feel like he is urging himself forwards in the song, to be alert but also to revel in the time you have. The refrain of ‘Golden Years’ is almost a mantra.
Our version is not a straight cover, its a personal interpretation of a song that could be read a million ways. Some brilliant people contributed to the recording process and Tony Visconti mixing it took it to another level.
Mr Visconti really does have an uncanny knack of making musical moments happen. It was a rare honour to sit with him while he worked on this.
