September 25th at The Barbican, London & 26th at Fiddlers Club, Bristol
In LONDON (uk)

This special concert, curated and hosted by William Dalrymple whose latest book Nine Lives is subtitled ‘in search of the sacred in modern India’, features Susheela Raman and Baul virtuoso Paban Das Baul and the Bauls Of Bengal - a group of itinerant mystic minstrels whose beliefs draw on Vaishnavite Hindu and Sufi Muslim thought - will offer a unique insight into some of the fascinating spiritual and musical traditions that still thrive in the subcontinent despite huge social and economic change.

Susheela Raman is a real treasure; one of the most bewitching singers you are likely to encounter. Her spellbindingly beautiful voice has connected with millions of music lovers from all over the world. Tamil Londoner Susheela is one of the most interesting musicians emerge amongst the Asian disapora, equally at home with South Indian Classical as with Jimi Hendrix and Fela Kuti, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Aretha Franklin. As a composer, arranger and interpreter she has forged her own unique, inclusive sound and has already gained immense critical and popular acclaim for her records. Susheela is also known and loved for her very intense and compelling live performances

Paban Das Baul hails from the district of Murshidabad in West Bengal, India - an area which over centuries has seen the emergence of syncretism between Tantric, Vaishnava, Muslim and Buddhist traditions through music, dance and song. Well-known for his improvising prowess on the dubki (a small tambourine) and the lyrical beauty of his songs, he is also celebrated for his ability to create trance-like states in his listeners. The Bauls are a group of mystic minstrels, drawn mainly from Vaishnavite Hindus and Sufi Muslims; the word ‘Baul’ means divinely possessed, without limits; Paban was initiated into the group by Subal Das Baul at 14 and now, like the other Bauls, tells stories of the earth, the body, sensual love and submission to the divine through song. He’ll be joined on stage by Debdas Baul, Kanai Das Baul and Nimai Goswami.
